Para quem ainda não sabe eu estou cursando o meu mestrado em Estudos Ingleses na Universidade de Munique, semestre passado nós tivemos uma matéria intitulada “Early Modern Poetry” onde estudamos vários poetas ingleses do período da renascença, passando pela era Tudor e indo até a era Elizabetana, falamos, analisamos e discutimos os grandes poetas dessa eras, Wyatt, Surrey, Spenser, Shakespeare, entre outros, e o que todos tinham em comum? Eram homens.
Em momento algum estudamos as poetizas que escreveram nessa época, e eu, no final do semestre decidi que o meu ensaio, um trabalho de vinte páginas, seria dedicado a uma dessas mulheres, e eu escolhi Isabella Whitney, não sabemos muito sobre sua vida, mas sabemos que ela conseguiu uma façanha: escrever e publicar textos seculares em uma época onde mulheres não sabiam nem ler, nem escrever e eram consideradas legalmente como propriedade dos seus pais, e mais tarde, de seus maridos.
Isabella mostra-se uma mulher muito bem instruída e versada em assuntos como história de mitologia grega, o que mais me incomoda é que hoje, cinco séculos depois, ainda não estudamos, não falamos e não damos importância a uma das únicas vozes femininas que temos acesso da época renascentista.

ENGLISH - Maybe you already know that I am getting my master's degree in English Studies at the University of Munich, and last semester, we had a course entitled “Early Modern Poetry”, where we studied several English poets of the Renaissance period, which includes the Tutor and the Elizabethan era, we talked, we analyzed and we discussed the great poets of that time, Wyatt, Surrey, Spenser, Shakespeare, among others, and what did they all have in common? They were men.
We didn’t even mention the female renaissance poets, and I, at the end of the semester, decided that my essay, in a twenty-page work, would be dedicated to one of these women, and I chose Isabella Whitney. We don’t really know much about Isabella’s life, but we know that she managed to do something incredible: writing and publishing secular texts in a time when women couldn’t even read or write and were legally seen as property, owned by their parents, and later, by their husbands.
Isabella appears to be a woman very well educated and well versed in subjects such as history and Greek mythology. And what bothers me most is that today, five centuries later, she is nowhere to be found in our studies, we don’t talk about, we don’t read and we don’t give attention to one of the only female voices from the Renaissance era.
